Brake Repair & Inspection
Squealing, grinding, or a soft pedal? We inspect the full brake system and repair what's actually worn — at AAJ Auto Service on South Cooper St.
Signs of Brake Wear
Brake symptoms can come from pads, rotors, calipers, fluid, or the hardware that holds them. Any of these is worth a look before the problem gets worse.
- Squealing, squeaking, or grinding when you brake
- A pulsation or vibration in the brake pedal
- A soft or spongy pedal feel
- Longer stopping distances than usual
- The brake warning light on the dash
Brake Noise & Vibration
Squealing can mean worn pads or a wear indicator making contact. Grinding often means metal-on-metal — pads worn through to the rotor. Pulsation can come from a warped rotor or uneven wear.
Each symptom can have multiple causes, which is why a proper inspection matters before any parts are replaced.
Inspection vs. Repair
An inspection checks the condition of your brake system — pads, rotors, calipers, lines, and fluid — and tells you what's worn or failing.
Repair replaces the parts that need it. You don't have to authorize repairs at an inspection; it's information first.
When Driving May Be Unsafe
If you notice any of these, call the shop before driving further:
- Grinding noises — metal-on-metal contact can damage rotors quickly
- A brake pedal that goes to the floor or feels very soft
- Braking takes noticeably longer than it used to
- The brake warning light stays on after starting

Brake Repair Questions
What's the difference between a Brake Inspection and a Brake Change?
An inspection checks the condition of your brake system and tells you what's worn. A Brake Change replaces pads (and rotors if needed). If you're not sure what you need, start with an inspection.
Do I need an inspection before a brake change?
Not always. If you already know your pads need replacing, you can book a Brake Change directly. If you're unsure what's causing the noise or pedal feel, start with an inspection.
How long does it take?
A Brake Inspection is about 20 minutes. A Brake Change is about 30 minutes. Deeper repairs involving rotors, calipers, or lines may take longer.
My brakes are grinding — is it safe to drive?
Grinding usually means metal-on-metal contact. Driving can damage the rotors and increase your stopping distance. Call the shop before driving if you can.
