Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light
A warning light doesn't tell the whole story. We test the systems behind the code to find the actual cause — at AAJ Auto Service on South Cooper St.
What Engine Diagnostics Involve
More Than a Code Read
A diagnostic appointment starts with a scan tool — but it doesn't end there. The technician reviews the trouble codes, then tests the related systems and components to find what's actually causing the symptom. A code points to a system or circuit; it doesn't always name the failed part.
Why the Code Isn't the Answer
A code like "system too lean" can mean a vacuum leak, a bad sensor, a fuel delivery issue, or something else entirely. Replacing parts without testing can waste money and leave the problem unsolved. That's why we diagnose before we repair.
Signs You May Need a Diagnostic
Any of these can point to an engine, sensor, fuel, or emissions issue. Bring it in and we'll figure out what's actually going on.
- Check engine light or other warning indicators on the dashboard
- Rough idling, hesitation, or stumbling under acceleration
- Stalling or difficulty starting the engine
- Reduced power, sluggish response, or poor fuel economy
- Unusual smells, smoke, or fluid leaks under the hood
When to Stop Driving
If you notice any of these, pull over safely and call the shop or a tow truck before driving further:
- A flashing check engine light — indicates a misfire that can damage the catalytic converter
- Rapid temperature rise or an overheating engine
- Sudden loss of power while driving
- Heavy smoke from the exhaust or under the hood
- Low oil pressure warning on the dash

Engine Diagnostics Questions
Is a diagnostic the same as a repair?
No. A diagnostic identifies the problem through testing. Repairs are separate — no work starts without your approval.
Do I need to book a diagnostic if I already know what's wrong?
If you know the exact service you need — like an oil change or brake inspection — you can book that directly. If the cause isn't clear, book a diagnostic so we can find it before replacing parts.
How long does the diagnostic take?
The Engine Diagnostics appointment is about 60 minutes. Deeper repairs, if needed, may require a separate visit or parts ordering.
Will you fix it the same day?
Sometimes. Simple repairs can often be done the same visit, but deeper repairs may require ordering parts or scheduling a separate appointment.
